For this experiment we learned and went into more about what atoms are. Atoms are the smallest unit of an element, structured by Subatomic Particles which is Proton(p+), Electron(e-) and Neutron(n0). There is a Nutshell and that is made of energy levels in a atom and in those energy levels there contains electrons and inside of all those levels are balls made of neutrons and protons which creates the center of the atom(Nucleus). We then learned about reading elements on the periodic table and how an atom looks like for an element by knowing the atomic number(number of P+ and e-) and atomic mass(atomic mass-p+=n0) .
For the lab we used a volumetric flask, a balloon, magnesium, water, and citric acid. we then added the citric acid and magnesium and as soon as we did that we added water and right after you fill close to half way you attach the balloon on top quickly to trap it all in the balloon. Magnesium and citric acid create hydrogen so we used to balloon to capture it like I said before. After all of it is in the balloon you tie it and see if it floats. Ours didn't really float but it was really light. We then decided to blow up the balloons to get water out of them so Andrew lit a candle and one by one we all blew up our balloons. It was really interesting to see the outcome of these chemicals and interesting to see what we can do for entertainment . Safety First.
